Grid Instructions

1.     RADIO:  It’s important to understand how to use the radio correctly.

a.     Radio should be set to frequency 4.3 to communicate with workers.

b.     Use the orange talk button to communicate.

c.     Don’t use the “Call” button.

d.     Always wait to talk for a second after depressing the talk button (otherwise your first few words may get cut off)

e.     Face into the wind when talking so that the wind doesn’t blow into the microphone.

f.      If your radio “beeps” when you depress the talk button that’s a signal that your batteries are going dead. Call in and someone will bring you replacements.

2.     GRID: Create two Grids.  Each of which will contain 3 or 4 single-driver lines and 1 dual-driver line.  It’s a good idea to mark the grid lines in advance with cones, so the drivers can easily see where to line up without additional instruction.

3.     Make sure there is adequate room at the back of grid for cars to line up safely.  Form additional lines if necessary.

4.     It is your job to collect the timing cards in the correct order.

a.     Start by collecting the first set of cards from the Duel Driver line

b.     Then go to the Single Driver lines.  Collect half of the Single Driver timing cards (1.5 lines),

c.     Then go back to the Duel Driver line (for second drivers timing cards)

d.     Finally collect the remaining second half of the Single Driver lines.  IMPORTANT: Remember what car is the start of the second half of the single driver lines.

5.     Once the cars start entering the course, communicate with the drivers in grid to make sure they are ready. It’s especially important to inform the person at the start of a new line, what car he/she is going to be following….so they can get ready in advance.

6.     Make sure people stay with their cars in grid.  If you find an empty car that’s holding up the line, don’t be afraid to shout to try and find the driver (try not to upset anyone).

7.     If you’re lucky enough to have a second grid worker to help you, have them work the back of grid, making sure drivers keep their speeds down approaching grid, making sure drivers are with their cars,  and  know when their line will start moving, etc…
